High-quality builders do not cut corners. When you are working with your contractor on building your custom home insist on spray foam insulation. At Far Hills Design Build, we always suggest to use it in all of our custom home and addition building projects. In this article, we are going to outline why spray foam insulation is superior to other insulation types.
What is Spray Foam Insulation?
Spray foam insulation is made of isocyanate and polyol resin. These two products react when mixed to expand up to 30-60 times the initial liquid volume. The product produces a high thermal installation with virtually no air infiltration. When it comes to spray foam, there are two different types: open cell and closed cell. Open cell functions as an air barrier only; whereas, the closed cell creates a barrier from both air and moisture.
Where to Use
Spray foam can fill the attic, walls, and floor of a home. It can be especially useful underneath heavy objects such as bathtubs and washers because it adds structural support and creates a water barrier. When in walls, it can dampen noise between rooms. It can also be used to insulate pipes.
Why We Use It
Spray foam insulation is far more effective than traditional insulation. This is especially true in colder climates. The colder it gets, the more you need to invest in spray foam. Here in Central New Jersey, the winters can get very cold. That’s why we use Spray Foam in Far Hills building projects.
Ways Spray Foam Insulation is Superior
Traditional fiberglass insulation lets air through. Depending on the type of spray foam, you will have little to no air leakage. Spray foam stops air and moisture, it blocks dust and pollen, and it adds strength to the building structure. Spray foam provides increased sustainability in the form of reduced heating and cooling cost. Homeowners see improved HVAC performance and less wear and tear on equipment. Spray foam can last over 80 years; whereas, traditional insulation is only suitable for 10 – 25 years.
Best Time to Install
The best time to install spray foam is during new home construction. However, you can also have it professionally installed during significant home renovations.
