Keeping the Peace with Your Neighbors During Construction

When you’re dreaming of that perfect home, you probably don’t have your neighbors in mind. However, your dream house might not be perfect if it damages your relationship with the people next door. You have to live next to them for years to come. So, don’t let a few months of noisy construction spoil your relationship with your neighbors. Considerate homeowners can make a few small gestures of goodwill that will do wonders in smoothing things over.

Communicate with Your Neighbors

There’s not much you can do about the noise and disruption caused by renovations. However, being upfront with your neighbor is a diplomatic gesture. Let your neighbors know beforehand that the construction will be taking place. Inform them of the anticipated length of the project and when they can expect work crews to be on site. Consider giving them your cell phone number. That way if any serious disturbances arise, they can call you and you can take it up with your builder. A good contractor will listen to your concerns and take them seriously.

Hire a Considerate Builder

Of course, the number one thing you can do is to contract with a firm that has respectful workers. Talk to your contractor about cleaning up at the end of each day and keeping the site neat. Before you hire a builder, talk to them about how they will minimize the impact on the street. This is good for your relationships in the long-run, and it’s just good practice to work with a company that is respectful.

Keep Appropriate Working Hours

Noise is the biggest issue construction causes for your neighbors. Try your best to restrict crews in your home to normal 8-to-5 business hours when most people are at work. Ear-splitting work early in the morning or late in the evening disrupts precious sleeping, dinner, and family time. When crews need to work early or late schedule the most disruptive work for during the day. Also, avoid weekend work whenever possible. If an emergency arises and crew must work at odd hours, consider sending an apology note to your neighbors.
